1.10pm The academic job application process - Professor Virginia Davis (Head of Department, Queen Mary University of London), Dr Alex Bamji, Dr Kate Bradley (University of Kent)
This session will provide an insider's perspective on appointments (from advert and job specifications to shortlisting), consider what you should put in your application, and provide insights into presentations and interviews on interview day.
2.20pm Demystifying acronyms - Dr Alex Bamji
Don’t know your subject benchmarks from your VLE? This session will familiarise you with common acronyms you may encounter when applying for academic jobs, including REF, QAA, PGCLTHE, LTC, and a variety of HE institutions from AHRC to UCU.

3.00pm CV workshop - Professor Virginia Davis
A brief introduction on ‘what makes a good CV’ will be followed by small group work to help you enhance and polish your own CV.
3.50pm Career opportunities beyond academia - Dr Michelle Johansen (Havering Museum) and Dr Simon Griffiths (British Academy Policy Centre and Goldsmiths, University of London)
This session will explore alternative or complementary routes to a career in academia, with a particular focus on public policy and museums.

The workshop is aimed at early-career historians, especially postdocs but also those nearing completion of their PhDs. The event is free and financial assistance may be available to those travelling from outside London (please ask about this when reserving your place). Places are limited to 25 and, although PhD students are welcome to apply, priority may be given to those of postdoctoral status.
